The Via Ferrata de Roche Veyrand is a real gem hidden away in the Chartreuse mountains.? The Chartreuse mountains run between Grenoble in the South and Chambery in the North in the Isere and Savoie departments of France.
The via ferrata is accessed from the village of Saint-Pierre d’Entremont after a approach walk of about 40 minutes.? The Roche Veyrand dominates the village and the via ferrrata tops out on the steep limestone cliffs clearly visible from the village.? The via ferrata is in two sections enabling you to “escape” if time or nerve run out.? The first section of the route a pillar and then a series of steep walls plus a Nepal bridge.? At the end of this section you can “escape” to join the descent path.
The next section starts with a Nepal bridge and then goes from cave to cave trending leftwards.? The exposure starts to make itself felt. The limestone here is excellent with rain channels sculpted in the rock.? The route now leads up to the steep, athletic exit and a magnificent view point over the Chartreuse.? Descend by the indicated path or you can continue on to the summit of the Roche Veyrand itself.
A superb via ferrata in the calm of the Chartreuse.
